Recommendations

Cotton buds for domestic use can be produced with different stick material, i.e. wood, paper and plastic. It is important in thinking what type of rigidity, form of the tip and how the sticks should be disposed of.

In case a very rigid stick is required you should choose Cotton bud with a wooden stick with a size of 72x2.5 mm. Most common wood material is white birch wood. In application of a cotton bud with wooden sticks one should control the stick in order to check for splinters. We in our production take care to use splinter free sticks and have increased the diameter of the stick from 2.2mm to 2.5mm this given an even stronger stick. It is advisable to check for roundness of the sticks also. This gives the consumer a quick overview that the production process is much more controlled, and the stick is produced on more advanced machines, thus they should be more hygienic, and the wood used is from virgin wooden logs.

The rigidity of this stick allows you better control of the bud, and it is thus easier to clean an area where more force is to be applied. When cotton buds are produced from wooden sticks glue is applied in order to attach the cotton tip to the stick. This process always gives a better tip in that it is much more difficult to detach the cotton from the stick.

The medium rigidity stick is a Cotton bud with a paper stick with a size of 72x2.5 mm. Paper sticks are produced with virgin paper material giving the sticks a clean and relatively strong stick. Although it should be noted that in the production process of paper a lot of water is used and it does give an environmental burden.

We strongly recommend using paper sticks as they are naturally bio-degradable. As they are relatively rigid, where they are applied in excess force in a wrong area they will bend without causing damage. When cotton buds are produced from paper sticks glue is applied in order to attach the cotton tip to the stick. This process always gives a better tip in that it is much more difficult to detach the cotton from the stick.

The lowest rigidity stick is a Cotton bud with a plastic stick with a size of 72x2.5 mm. Plastic sticks are produced when plastic is extruded on machines. As sticks can be extruded with different wall thickness it is recommended that you check sticks to see how easily they can bend, too easily bendable sticks often bend without returning to its original position. We therefore recommend not using sticks with less than 170kg/mil for this application. Although environmentally these buds could be separated and recycled in theoretical manner, this is often not done, therefore it is quite difficult to bio-degrade these sticks.

When cotton buds are produced from plastic sticks, heat is applied at the tips in order to attach the cotton tip to the stick. This process always gives a weaker tip in that it is easier to detach the cotton from the stick. It this thus recommended if they should be applied for orifice cleaning, the tips should be gently rotated in a 45 degrees, counter and clockwise twist. If the tips seem to detach, they should not be used.

When choosing the correct head shape, it is important to note that the tip of the bud sticks should be completely covered. For sensitive use apply a gentle pressure on the tip and you should be feeling the soft cotton and not the stick. We recommend tips with at least 1.5mm cotton cushioning from the stick end to the tip. We also recommend usage of min. 5 grams of cotton per 100 tips.

Although paper and wooden sticks are bio-degradable and could be disposed of in toilets, the amount of sticks being disposed of in this manner is extremely large and it strongly recommended to dispose of properly. Water works spend a lot of energy and time in removing these from their system.

Cotton buds are produced in order to be used for cosmetic and cleaning purposes, however, if they are used for cleaning the ear, care should be shown not to insert into the inner ear canal, this could damage the inner ear canal. Some of the natural ear wax in this canal, is there for protection and should not to be removed.
